Leicester Hospitals Charity A.C.O.R.N. Appeal aims to raise £60,000 for an Embryo Monitoring System with Time-Lapse Image Capture – a major advance in embryo culture, proven to benefit patient treatment and improve pregnancy rates.
Time lapse technology was introduced in 2009. It allows monitoring of IVF embryo development without the need of removing the embryos from the incubator.
Embryo selection is optimised as time lapse monitors the rate at which the embryo progresses from 1 stage to the next. The interval between stages is crucial to predict which embryos are genetically normal and have the highest potential to implant and result in a successful pregnancy.
It basically consists of an incubator with a camera that records a series of images at regular intervals. About 80% of all UK units have some form of time lapse technology.
Some of the benefits include; improved outcomes in terms of live healthy babies, quicker time to pregnancy, standardisation of embryo development.
